Mokhazni

A member of the auxiliary force attached to the regional administration, drawn from the term makhzan — the central state. Historically the mokhazni served the caid as personal guard, escort, and minor enforcement; in contemporary usage the term continues to denote the gendarmerie auxiliaries assigned to rural districts. The mokhazni appears in the kasbah literature as the standing armed retainer of the Glaoua and other regional caids in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the kasbah barracks (qishla) sometimes preserved at major Glaoua sites housed precisely this auxiliary garrison.
