Medina

The historic urban core of a Maghrebi city, typically walled and characterised by dense organic urban fabric, narrow streets, and a network of mosques, hammams, fondouks, and markets. The medinas of Marrakech, Fez, and Meknes are inscribed as World Heritage Sites; many smaller medinas survive across the region. The term sits outside the principal scope of this archive, which focuses on the rural and pre-Saharan vernacular, but appears in glossary form for cross-reference.
