Getty Conservation Institute
The Getty Conservation Institute is the conservation arm of the J. Paul Getty Trust, based in Los Angeles. The institute's Earthen Architecture Initiative has been a major actor in the field of earthen heritage conservation since the 1990s, working across multiple regions including North Africa, South America, the Middle East, and South Asia.
The Getty's principal Moroccan engagement has been the Conservation and Rehabilitation Plan for Kasbah Taourirt, undertaken in partnership with CERKAS from 2011. The work combined emergency stabilisation, full architectural documentation through photogrammetry and HBIM (the latter delivered by Carleton Immersive Media Studio), archival and oral history research, and the development of conservation policies intended to be applicable to the broader southern Moroccan corpus.
The Getty's role in southern Moroccan heritage has been catalytic rather than continuous. The institute does not maintain a permanent presence in the region; its engagements are project-based and depend on partnership with Moroccan institutions for implementation and continuity.
